2016 ASCE STEM Expo

The 2016 ASCE STEM Expo was held on Saturday March 5th at Thomas Worthington High School.  This free event welcomed more than 450 students to participate in more than 40 STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) related activities.  This year marks the third year for the event put on by the ASCE Central Ohio Section.  Carpenter Marty Transportation has been proud activity sponsor for all three years.

Our activity for this year's event was the "Penny Bridge." Each student was given two woods blocks placed seven inches apart.  They had to design a bridge between the two blocks using only one sheet of paper.  The paper could be folded, rolled, crumbled, or manipulated in any way they chose.  The goal was to see how many pennies their "paper bridge" design could hold without collapsing.  We were amazed by the creativity and enthusiasm the students put into our activity.  More than half of the students' bridges were able to hold more than 100 pennies!

"The ASCE STEM Expo is always such a great experience.  Everyone involved has a great time.  Each of the penny bridge designs exceeded our expectations this year." - Matt, Project Engineer

Some of the other exhibits and activities included marshmallow cell towers, a turtle research station with live turtles, edible race cars, Lego robot battles, and many more.
