The Delaware County Engineer’s Office selected Carpenter Marty Transportation to provide engineering design services for this intersection improvement project that involved the improvement of 0.55 mile of CR 124 (Home Road) by widening the existing pavement to provide additional turn lanes at the intersection with TR 125/CR 125 (Steitz Road) and the installation of a traffic signal. The project also included 0.50 mile of improvement on Steitz Road by widening the pavement to provide left turn lanes for eastbound and westbound traffic. The project started with an initial feasibility study to provide guidance on necessary improvements within the project area. This study included collection of traffic data and the development of alternatives. These alternatives included a roundabout and signalized intersection. Capacity analysis was performed on each alternative in order to make recommendations to reach acceptable levels of service.  Home Road is classified as a major arterial with design speed of 55MPH and has a total of 15 access points within the project area. Steitz Road is classified as a major collector with a design speed of 55MPH. The analysis showed that a two lane roundabout would be necessary in the east/west direction which was not desirable given the right-of-way constraints in the area.  The signalized intersection was selected as the preferred alternative and includes the design of a mast arm signal, increasing Home Road from two lanes to five lanes, and increasing Steitz Road from two lanes to three lanes.
