This project involved the replacement of the existing superstructure and abutments for the three span (60'-75'-60') continuous steel beam bridge over Sunfish Creek. The existing hammer head piers supported by spread footings into rock were evaluated to ensure they could support current loading requirements. The existing pier stems were salvaged and the hammerhead caps were replaced due to deterioration. New painted rolled steel beams were made composite with the proposed bridge deck. Concrete parapet was used due to the height of the deck surface above the creek exceeding 25'. The proposed abutments were made semi-integral, supported by two rows of steel piles driven to rock. A hydraulic study was performed and approved by the local floodplain coordinator. Environmental coordination was mitigated by restricting access to the creek. Traffic was detoured throughout construction and right-of-way impacts were avoided. Additional work included paved gutters, sight distance evaluation for the intersection at the rear approach, and geotechnical investigations.
