Employee Highlight - Chelsea Cousins

Chelsea Cousins has been with Carpenter Marty Transportation for the last 5 years. She is a part of our traffic team and specializes in safety studies, traffic design, and data collection. When asked what she wished people knew about her job, her answer: “Well the sarcastic response would be: driving doesn’t make you a traffic engineer! But in all seriousness, traffic engineering involves a lot more public outreach than many would think. Developers are required to do traffic studies, they don’t just pick a spot and start building.”

Chelsea recently got to add two important letters to her name, when she passed the PE exam taken in December. “In my career thus far, I am most proud of passing the PE exam. I studied over the span of 2 ½ months for a total of just under 200 hours!” Since reaching her largest professional goal by passing the PE exam, she is enjoying where she is in her career currently. Chelsea thinks in the near future she would like to get more involved with signal design and even start attending more of the public involvement meetings held for projects Carpenter Marty is completing. In addition to passing the PE exam, other highlights of her career include working with the City of New Albany and Intel to provide all traffic volumes for the Intel plant coming to Licking County. CM’s traffic volumes ultimately aided in Intel’s decision of choosing this location. Ground was recently broken in September of 2022. You can read more about our involvement in the project here.

When asked what she would say to people pursuing a career in engineering, Chelsea replied, “Don’t worry so much about what the courses were like in college. Be prepared to learn on the job and about what the job means rather than exactly what the textbooks say.” Throughout the duration of her career here, Chelsea’s favorite part about working for CM is the collaboration aspect around the office. “I am able to work and move within different groups in the office. I really enjoy the tasks I am able to complete between traffic, signals, roadway and even some bridge.” With our open office setup, team members are easily accessible. Collaboration is a key part of all the work we do in the office! “I would recommend CM because you get to try new things and get your feet wet when you start in the industry. I was always given a chance to complete different tasks and get an idea of what I enjoyed most. They have always been super flexible and understanding of my busy schedule with lacrosse. It’s nice to know your company values work/life balance.”

When Chelsea isn’t at work, she keeps herself busy 24/7! She is the Olentangy High School Girls’ Varsity Lacrosse Coach and usually leaves straight from work for practice. When school ball isn’t in season, she also coaches travel lacrosse for Blackjack Elite and referees indoor lacrosse games for NorthStar Lacrosse. When she isn’t busy with work, coaching, or refereeing, she likes to box, read, go on walks, and even considers herself a tea connoisseur. Sometime in the near future she would like to take more vacations and visit more national parks!
