2018 Ohio ITE Young Engineer of the Year

Carpenter Marty Transportation’s own Gina Balsamo was awarded the Ohio Section of the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) Young Engineer Award. This award has been given by the Ohio Section since 1975. Gina is the 34th recipient of the award and the second member of the Carpenter Marty Transportation team to receive this honor. ITE is an organization of transportation professionals who work to improve mobility and promotes professional development. The organization provides opportunities and resources for Ohio transportation professionals to stay informed on the latest technologies and practices.

CM team with Young Engineer Award Recipient - Gina BalsamoA Nomination and Awards Committee, comprised of past section presidents, was tasked to select one award winner from the list of nominees. Factors they took into consideration included ITE Section and National membership, ITE committee contributions, positions and offices held within the organization, professional accomplishments, community involvement, and demonstrated leadership in the profession, ITE, and the community.

Gina leads all traffic studies at Carpenter Marty Transportation. She has six years of transportation industry experience, and she has been a part of the Carpenter Marty Transportation team for three years. She has been involved in more than 150 projects involving safety, capacity, and traffic analysis. Gina is an expert in all aspects of developing safety studies including data collection, operational analysis, existing conditions assessment, access management planning, capacity analysis, signal timing and phasing assessment, storage length calculation, clearance interval calculation, crash clean up, crash diagram development, countermeasure development, cost estimating, and cost/benefit analysis.

Some of Gina’s contributions include: Ohio Section of ITE Program Committee Chair; mentor for graduate engineers and college interns; volunteer for the annual ASCE STEM Expo, Worthington Resource Pantry, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Ohio, and ODOT’s Adopt-A-Highway; and dedication to the Ohio Department of Transportation Safety Program.
